Things to Do on Rote Island

Description

Rote Island is full of natural beauty, cultural charm, and laid-back adventures—perfect for both surfers and non-surfers alike. Whether you're chasing waves or simply seeking serenity, there's plenty to explore right from Bo’a Gardens.

Surfing & Ocean Adventures

With its wide variety of reef breaks, Rote Island offers waves for surfers of all levels. From the famous T-Land in Nemberala to the powerful Bo’a wave just a 5-minute walk from Boa Gardens, you’ll find a surf spot that suits your style.

Other surf spots include:

  • Oeseli – a left-hand break that works best with a solid swell
  • One Palm and Squealers – great for beginners, located in Nemberala
  • Sucky Mamas – a fun righthander just past Nemberala
  • Breaks around the nearby islands of Ndana and Ndoo
Rote is also an exciting destination for foiling, kite surfing, sailing, and stand-up paddling (SUP).
For those who prefer a different kind of ocean experience, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and island hopping can all be arranged directly through us. Visit our Boat Charter page for more details.

*Best season: late October to early April.
  • Paddle through the Feemok mangroves at high tide by kayak or stand-up paddleboard.
  • Charter our boat Khalisi to visit Nirwana Lake in Oeseli or nearby islands like Heliana, Ndana, Landu, and Doo.

Shops & Dining in Nemberala

Just 7 km (about a 15-minute motorbike or car ride) from Boa Gardens, Nemberala is the island’s main tourist hub. Here, you’ll find a variety of small shops, local warungs, restaurants, bars, and beach cafés—perfect for a change of scenery or a casual night out.
One local highlight is the weekly wet market every Tuesday morning, where vendors sell fresh produce, fish, meat, spices, and local goods. It’s best to go early in the morning for the widest selection and the liveliest atmosphere.
